In the centre of Kyiv, where two large metropolitan highways – Volodymyrska street and Bohdan Khmelnytskyi street cross there is a building, which is romantically known as the Temple of Muses, an architectural pearl of Kyiv. This is the National Opera of Ukraine named after an outstanding Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. In spite of the relatively short history of Kyiv Opera, an impressive number of dazzling singers have performed on its stage: Mattia Batistani, Maria Galvani, Lina Cavallieri, Titta Ruffo, Regina Pinkert, Leonid Sobinov, Fedor Shalyapin. In the Soviet times, in spite of the almost complete physical removal of Ukrainian intellectuals, the Kyiv Opera managed to retain its Ukrainian traditions.
The greatest world operas and ballets by Verdi, Puccini, Tchaikovsky, Lysenko and Hulak-Artemovskyi have been performed there. In 1971 the Kyiv Ballet's performance of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet was recognized by UNESCO as the best interpretation of his famous ballet. The Kyiv Opera and Ballet House maintain the old traditions as well as seeking contemporary perfection.
