KYIVO-PECHERSKA LAVRA

Date:
Monday, 7 September 2009
Time:
09:00 – 14:00

The golden-domed ensemble on the hills called the Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra is one of the most ancient and important monasteries since the time of Kyivska Rus. It made Kyiv the “Rome” of Orthodox Christianity and received pilgrims from all over Europe. It continues to attract droves of visitors today. Founded in 1051 by monks Antoniy and Feodosiy, the Lavra has become a spiritual heart of Ukraine, a place of religious pilgrimage. Monks worshipped, lived and were buried in caves, where their bodies are still kept in wooden and glass tombs in the underground labyrinths which run for many miles. Many assume this is due to the specific natural conditions of the caves, but pilgrims from all over the world believe the phenomenon has supernatural origins.

The territory of Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra is 28 hectares and contains not only churches, towers and an underground cave system but also some of Kyiv’s most interesting museums. These museums with their exhibits of applied arts, rare books, unique miniatures and especially the collection of Scythian gold also attract pilgrims and tourists, but none of the material wealth on display can compare with the unusual stillness and peace of this holy place.

 PYROHOVO VILLAGE

Date:
Tuesday, 8 September 2009
Time:
09:00 – 14:00

There is a place in Kyiv where you can find yourself in a 16th century Ukrainian village. Pyrohovo is a picturesque open-air museum of old Ukrainian lifestyle and folk culture. The museum is divided into areas representing different regions of Ukraine. The clay huts roofed with thatch or wooden shingles and the archaic barns and wells recreate an authentic village atmosphere. Everything is meant to bring you back to the Ukraine of the 16th to 19th centuries. At Pyrohovo you will find wooden churches, windmills, and even a school building typical of rural areas from recent centuries. Different kinds of structures (water-mills, forges, cattle-sheds “shopa”, granaries “komora”, threshing floors, “stodola” for storing cereals, apiaries, hen houses, cellars and wells) will tell you the story of how folks lived in Ukraine centuries ago. When you get inside these huts you will find stunning exhibitions of traditional Ukrainian clothing, ceramics, household and farming equipment and of course the stove. If everything at the museum seems very authentic, that’s because it really is. Most of the buildings are in fact original and were moved here piece by piece from villages all over Ukraine.

OPTIONAL TOUR PROGRAMME

THE NATIONAL WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL

Date:
Monday, 7 September 2009
Time:
14:00 – 17:00
Price:
EUR 24 per person
(minimum of 10 persons to operate)

This is one of the largest museums in Ukraine (over 300 thousand exhibits) centred round the famous 62-meter high Motherland statue grasping a 12-ton sword and a shield, which has become one of the recognized landmarks of Kyiv. This World War II memorial complex, which opened in 1981, includes a museum with 18 different galleries, an eternal flame, plaques honouring particularly heroic Soviet cities and an outdoor display containing military planes and other equipment from various wars. The sculptures in the valley depict the courageous defence of the Soviet border from the 1941 German invasion, terrors of the Nazi occupation and struggle of the partisan detachments. In honouring Soviet defenders during World War II, its Socialist Realism style is an interesting contrast to the nearby ancient golden-domed Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra.

GOLDEN-TOPPED KYIV

Date:
Monday, 7 September 2009
Time:
09:00 – 12:00
Price:
EUR 25 per person
(minimum of 10 persons to operate)

This tour will without a doubt, take your breath away and give a chance to survey the most beautiful and beloved of Kyiv’s monasteries and churches. You will catch your first glimpse of St. Sophia Cathedral – the majestic 13-cupola sanctuary adjoining Yaroslav’s Palace that became a holy place of worship for Kyivites as well as a political and cultural centre. Its interior of rich frescoes and mosaics made a strong impression on the ordinary worshippers of Kyiv. This most ancient church was built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise, who was eventually laid to rest inside, to commemorate the site of the victory of Kyivska Rus over the Pechenegs (Asian nomadic tribes) and to glorify Christianity. At the other end of a short street you’ll find the heavenly blue St. Michael’s Cathedral which is not as tall, but is just as gorgeous, with bright, vivid murals and golden domes. Originally built by Prince Sviatopolk in 1108, this cathedral was destroyed by the Soviet regime in the mid-1930s in keeping with their anti-religious programme. The reconstruction of St. Michael’s Cathedral was completed in May 2000. Upon leaving behind this beautiful sight and walking down a narrow street, you will soon stumble upon a small attractive Baroque church which is a masterpiece of the famous Italian architect Bartolommeo Rastrelli. Built in 1754, it’s one of the rare buildings in Kyiv which has managed to avoid serious damage or reconstruction. The elegant silhouette of its single large dome and five lesser cupolas are easily visible from Podil and beyond.

Sofiyivka is the National dendrological park of Ukraine, without exaggeration one of most beautiful places, created by the human hand. As soon as you get there you realize that everything here resembles a fairy tale. Covering 154.7 hectares of meticulously-landscaped grounds, Sofiyivka’s architectural wonders incorporate Greek mythology to produce an aristocratic park of days gone by. The man behind it all was Polish noble Count Stanislaw Potocki, who had the park commissioned in 1796 for his beautiful Greek wife Sofya. After six years of daily labour by 800 workers from the Uman region under the direction of Polish military engineer Ludwig Metsel, Potocki presented the park to his wife on her birthday and named it in her honour. At almost every turn there’s a new sight to behold - picturesque views framed by rare trees, waterfalls and grottoes, and classical sculptures of Mercury, Cupid and Paris to name but a few as well as busts of Greek philosophers.

CRIMEA – PEARL OF THE BLACK SEA

Date:
8 – 10 September 2009
Minimum Price:
EUR 588 per person (airfare included)
(minimum of 10 persons to operate)

It is the landscape which is the star in the Crimea; even those initially lured by the peninsula’s fascinating past usually come to agree. Not that ‘landscape’ means the pebbly Black Sea beaches, crumbling concrete high-rises and post-Soviet kitsch of the main resort, Yalta, which is will not steal the market from Benidorm any time soon. Rather, it is the sheer mountain cliffs rising behind a coastline covered with cypress, juniper and grape vines that make this place so breathtakingly exotic and unique. High limestone plateaux, expansive vistas, bizarre volcanic formations and Byzantine ‘cave cities’ all lie inland from such historical landmarks as Balaklava, Sevastopol and Livadia (where Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin carved up postwar Europe). Don’t miss a chance to visit the Bakhchisaray region, which is one of the highest concentrations of historical sites of all Crimea. Bakhchisaray's old town has a palace and several ancient Muslim mosques. Nearby is an ancient cliff monastery and one of Crimea's best-preserved "cave towns". The area around Bakhchisaray includes many scenic canyons and a number of ancient hilltop towns and fortresses.
